Super Salsa!

Why this spicy topper is great for more than just your tortilla chips

Salsa and chips is a delicious snack that has been a staple at parties for decades. If you’re a fan of tacos, then you know that salsa works well as a topping for your stuffed tortilla shell. But have you ever thought to get the salsa out of your refrigerator at breakfast? What about putting it on the dinner table to use with your grilled chicken meal? If party time and Mexican night are the only times you’ve made use of your mild, medium or hot salsa, then it’s time to think outside of the jar.

A great way to incorporate some vegetables into your breakfast is by adding a serving of salsa to your next dish of eggs. If you like your eggs scrambled, top them with your choice of salsa for a spicy breakfast. Try stuffing your next fluffy omelet with a serving of salsa and small serving of low fat shredded cheese for a delicious and filling breakfast.

Lunch time salads also present the perfect opportunity to add some salsa to your diet. New flavors of sweet salsa, such as pineapple or peach, make a sweet and tangy salad dressing for fresh spinach or other greens. Get an extra serving of vegetables in your salad by mixing some of your own fresh tomatoes into your previously prepared salsa. That extra serving of tomatoes will boost your intake of Lycopene, which is an important antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals in your body before they damage healthy cells. Studies have shown that antioxidants may help to reduce the risk of heart disease and different types of cancer.

Decorate your dinner table with a variety of salsas to help spice up your fresh grilled chicken. Grilled chicken is essentially a plain canvas that is waiting to be molded into a flavorful, healthy dinner. Black bean and corn salsa is a great topping with some extra added vegetables for a healthy bonus. If you’re not in the mood for spicy salsa, try topping your dinner with pineapple salsa. While it sounds like an odd combination, the sweetness of the fruit and the power of the spices come together to create a flavor that will make your dinner taste like a gourmet meal!
